Adult Basic Education (ABE)

Improve Reading, Writing and Math skills

The ABE program is for adults* wanting to work towards getting a High School Equivalency Diploma and/or for those who want to increase their reading and/or math skills.

 

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESL)

Improve your English

Learn and/or Improve your English

This program is for adults* who are new speakers of English and want to improve their English speaking, listening, and writing skills.

Literacy Volunteers of Broome-Tioga provides free, confidential tutoring with trained volunteer tutors. Sessions are generally held once a week for 1-2 hours per session.

Several options are available (note current tutoring options listed below).

Current tutoring OPTIONS

Option 1:  Meet with a tutor virtually using Zoom / Facetime. (Available for most ABE and ESL students).

Option 2:  Receive worksheets in the mail. Meet with tutor “over the phone.” (Available for most ABE and ESL students).

Option 3: Traditional 1-1 tutoring — Tutor meets with a student at an agreed upon time and place. These places are usually a local library, church or school. Sessions are generally held once a week for 1-2 hours per session.

NOTE: The following are UNAVAILABLE. These options may return in the future:

 

Math Lab – group setting of tutors and students

English Lab – group setting of tutors and students

ESL Conversation Lab – group setting of tutors and students

Short Term Mini Classes (on specific skills)

 

*Note: Students 16 -21 years of age cannot be enrolled in school to attend LVBTC
